Area helps storm family crossing Florida

This family from only 2 miles west of New Orleans is now homeless from the hurricane. They were passing through Gainesville on Saturday and stopped at a Wal-Mart parking lot hoping to gain enough gas money to make it to Orlando where they want to start a new life. Father of the family, Chuck Power, said he felt embarassed holding a sign and asking for food but there was no other choice. His children though, they had made a game out of it and had a good time telling me stories and showing me magic tricks.

However the copy desk changed my cutline. The original told how the people in the photo were debating how to phonetically spell the girl's name, which I thought was a pretty funny moment, but the photo looks like they were just standing around. Grr.

Not a nice thing to run into normally, but I was on the boardwalk above him. I was looking for an alligator, but of course when you need one you can't find one. So the snake was my find for the day.

Back to work

After a brief 2 weeks off, I'm back to work at the Gainesville Sun. During my break I spent 2 weeks in Berlin, Germany, with UF in Berlin: A Photojournalism Study Abroad program led by Professor Freeman. Check out the blog I kept of the trip at http://ufinberlin2005.blogspot.com.

Last week I got back to work though and shot an assignment on a new dance center for Gainesville. It's a center where any dance group or organization can rent out for workshops, ect. Read the article about it at:
